Newtrax to Deploy First Ever Advanced Personnel Safety System for Underground Mining in Brazil

Yamana Jacobina mine

Santiago, Chile – February 2018 — Newtrax Technologies Inc. (‘Newtrax’) – the leading provider of safety and operations management systems for underground hard rock mines – is pleased to announce it has been selected by Yamana Gold’s Jacobina mine to provide an advanced personnel tracking system with pedestrian E-stop capability.  This is Newtrax’s first Brazilian implementation and provides an entry into a jurisdiction with a significant and established mining industry.

Yamana Gold is an Americas focused precious metals producer with operating mines in Brazil, Canada, Chile and Argentina.  The Jacobina operation, located in Bahia state in northeast Brazil, consists of a complex of underground gold mines and a 6,500 tonnes per day carbon-in-pulp processing plant.  The implementation of Newtrack technology is an enhancement to the existing underground monitoring system at Jacobina and Yamana Gold selected it as an innovative solution that reflects its commitment to continuously improving its safety performance.

The Personnel Tracking capability is only one part of Newtrax’s broader Safety Solution for underground hard rock mechanized mines. By acquiring this feature, Yamana will gain access to the most advanced and comprehensive safety solutions available. Newtrax will be deploying 300 Personal Safety Devices consisting of Newtrax technology embedded into Brando Semi-Corded Cap Lamps.

The Newtrax Personnel Tracking system will provide shift supervisors with essential information and data on workers’ whereabouts to ensure their safety at all times. This Safety system will enable the mine to evacuate the workers and for workers to send distress calls to notify the surface in case of personal injury by simply clicking the cap lamp emergency buttons. The Personnel safety device also includes the “Man Down” feature which enables the surface and 6 LHD’s to be notified in case a worker is inert for more than 90 seconds due to injury.

“We are pleased to be working with Yamana Gold and supporting them implement an innovative technology at Jacobina to meet their objectives of continuously improving safety and the productivity of their people and mobile assets.  The strength of the Newtrax portfolio is our network agnostic capability which helps fulfill the needs of mines Wifi, LTE or even Leaky Feeder which in this case is allowing Jacobina to get significant benefits without having to invest heavily in new backbone infrastructure”, said Plauto Campos Menezes, Regional Sales Manager, Newtrax.
