Newtrax is Attending Mines and Money Asia 2018

Mining Safety: The Newtrax Mission

When trying to integrate safety technologies there are two very important component questions to keep in mind:

  1. Is the technology easy to use?
  2. Does the system reliably work?

With these in mind, Newtrax wanted to incorporate a product into their system that would create a central point of communication to connect all miners, vehicle operator’s, and safety personnel to the mining network.

Newtrax chose to make the focal point of communication attached to the miners cap lamp. Besides the fact that a cap lamp is a tool that miners simply cannot leave behind, it also provides personnel with a system that is always in reach and simple to operate. There are three key safety features that are constantly available to miners and to above ground personnel.

Proximity Alert-

A major safety issue in underground mining is the threat of vehicular accidents against pedestrian miners and between each other. In recent years, it was reported that a large proportion of mining accidents are caused by a lack of visibility. Newtrax Cap Lamps are equipped with two buttons on the side of the cap. When pressed, the systems sends an emergency stop signal to all mining vehicles in the area.

Evacuation Alert-

In the case of an evacuation, the Cap Lamps have been designed to individually start to blink, signaling the need to seek a refuge room or exit the mine. In order for the cap lamps to stop blinking and return to normal, the miner must turn the lamp off and back on again. This signals to emergency crews above ground that each of the individual miners received the message and is responding to the situation.

Man Down Alert-

In the case of a miner collapsing from injury or health issue, the Cap Lamp will begin to blink. After 60 seconds of immobility, the Cap Lamp will alert crew members in the vicinity. If the Cap Lamp remains still for an additional 30 seconds (90 seconds total), it will send the “man down” signal to rescue workers above ground while at the same time notifying team members and vehicles in the area.
